Gatton is a small rural community located between Ipswich and Toowoomba in the agriculturally rich Lockyer Valley. In 1897, Gatton College was established. It continues to be a focal point of the town’s intellectual life. When Norah, Ellen, and Michael Murphy were slain in 1898, it made national news. Today, Gatton serves as a major service centre for vegetables that are sent to Brisbane markets. The region also produces lucerne hay and dairy cattle, which thrive on the rich black soils of the Lockyer Plains.
Take a stroll around the lake, check out the ‘Lights on the Hill’ Trucking memorial, and enjoy observing birds in the wildlife preserve. Alternatively, if you want to learn more about Gatton’s history and region, go to the Gatton and District Historical Museum beside Lake Apex for an insight into town and district history.
Take a stroll down Railway Street and have a drink at Jak & Mo’s Taste Co Cafe, where you can get a wonderful cup of coffee and enjoy the variety of delicious alternatives on their menu.
