Mount Isa – Home To The Mother Of All Queensland Rodeo EventsMount Isa in Queensland is well known for its mining industry and hot, semi-arid climate. But did you know that Mount Isa is also home to the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere? The Mount Isa Rodeo has been running for 57 years and is a spectacular showcase of world-class competition and entertainment. It’s at the Mt Isa Rodeo that you will see all the top Australian rodeo champions compete. This is a ‘must do’ on anyone’s rodeo calendar!
A real Queensland rodeo experienceA record 24,000 fans walked through the gates of this great Australian rodeo in 2016. It’s no surprise considering the Mount Isa Rodeo won gold at the Queensland Tourism Awards in the same year. When it comes to rodeos in Queensland, this one is the bee’s knees. Mt Isa Rodeo dates are released well in advance with the event usually taking place over three days in August each year. This is the perfect time to see the many Mt Isa attractions and escape the cold weather down south. “Six of us flew into Mount Isa for the rodeo. Coming from a large capital city this event is like nothing else. Apart from the amazing skill and sheer courage the riders have, the spectacle of the rodeo is also about people watching - real cowboys and cowgirls from not only all over Australia but also other countries. It's hot and dusty but the beer is cold, there are plenty of food choices - just wander around and soak up the atmosphere.” – HarryOz, Trip Advisor

Hard Times Mine Underground TourThis underground tour shares the history and the workings of an underground mine. Get kitted out and descend into the mine in the Alimak Cage. It’s an experience to remember. “After donning our disposable overalls, hard hats and gum boots we set off with about 16 others for our tour. It was excellent and we learnt a lot about mining methods in the past. There were lots of hands-on activities underground for both kids and adults. The 'crib' of pasties and sandwiches was enjoyed more by the adults than the kids!”– CecilyJohn, Trip Advisor
Mount Isa City LookoutHaven’t got time to explore the whole town of Mount Isa? Take a trip up Hillary Street to the city lookout and enjoy the panoramic view of this famous mining town. “This is the best place to go if you want to see the whole city in one stop. Unfortunately, you cannot take your caravan to the top as the turning circle is not big enough. The sunset from here is amazing as the sun goes down over the mine.”– Steve S, Trip Advisor
Underground Hospital & MuseumMount Isa’s copper mine was thought to be of great value to the Japanese during the war in 1942. With the perceived threat of air raids, precautions were taken and an underground hospital built. This is a great place to experience one of the bygone eras of Mount Isa and learn about Australia’s war history. “Was an amazing experience, loved hearing the stories from the older generation of Isa'ns who volunteer their time. The walk through the underground hospital was amazing, and informative, and a definite eye opener. Would recommend to anyone.” – Michelle H, Trip Advisor
