Moonie Yabbie Races – A Quirky Country Queensland Event

For an Aussie tradition that is as wild and wacky as it gets, head to the Queensland outback town of Moonie for the annual Moonie Yabbie Races. Yes, you read that right. Those freshwater crustaceans usually found in dams are put to the test in an iconic race that stops the nation – well, stops the town at least!

11th annual Moonie Yabbie Races

The annual yabbie race has put the small town of Moonie Queensland on the map with travellers coming from far and wide to get in on the action. The quirky event attracted a crowd of more than 450 to the 10th annual race. That’s almost double the population of Moonie itself! Now in its 11th year, the 4 March 2017 event is set to be bigger and better than ever.

Yabby racing at its best

Some say larger claws are a winner; others swear by smaller legs and a harder shell. Truth be told you never can tell how your yabbie will perform under pressure. Choose yourself a beauty and get in on the yabby racing action. The Moonie Yabbie Races include a six-race program before the yabbies are put to the ultimate test in the Moonie Cup. An impressive collection of prizes is up for grabs, so if you play your crustacean right, you could leave with a fist full of cash.

Fun for the whole family

A fun-filled day for the whole family, the annual Moonie Yabbie Races offers a program of events from 1pm to 11.30pm. Frock up for the cocktail luncheon or enter the fashions on the field. After the race, enjoy bush poetry, live entertainment, rides, a helicopter lolly drop and face painting.

Moonie Queensland

You’ll find the quintessential Australian outback town of Moonie QLD in the Darling Downs region on the crossroads of the Moonie and Leichardt Highways. Moonie is approximately 331km from Brisbane, 113km from Dalby and 95km north of Goondiwindi. Moonie’s claim to fame, other than the yabby races of course, is oil. Moonie is the oil capital of Queensland and site of Australia’s first commercial oil field.
