Why visit Kronosaurus Korner?

100 million years ago, Richmond was 40 metres under water in what was Australia’s vast inland sea. Nowadays, all that’s left behind are the fossils of the ancient marine reptiles, fish and squid that once dominated the area. Kronosaurus Korner, as Australia’s premier marine fossil museum, provides a unique way for you and your family to get up close and personal with creatures older than even Tyrannosaurus Rex. There are nearly 1150 unique fossil specimens on display, including the museum’s piece de la resistance, the Richmond Pliosaur. The pliosaur was unearthed in 1989 and remains one of the best preserved Cretaceous marine reptiles in the world. This clever ‘dinosaur park’ style museum was developed because of this amazing Queensland discovery. You can see an awesome life size model out the front of the museum – it’s an experience you won’t soon forget! “I loved this display of fossils, very informative with super friendly staff that went out of their way. I can't believe I had never heard of it before as it was only a drop in on the way to NSW I will definitely be going back to try and find some of my own fossils. Big thank you to the scientist who come out and gave me a personal tour of the lab area.” Jamie T, Trip Advisor

Things to do for kids and adults

Kids and adults alike will be fascinated by the wonderful displays and exhibits on offer at Kronosaurs Korner. There’s an interactive kids’ corner with games and activities to keep them occupied while the adults visit with members of staff in the fossil preservation lab. Self-guided audio tours are the most popular way to explore the museum, and you can recharge the batteries with something delicious at the museum’s café. “We were impressed with the fossils on display and found the audio guide to be very informative. The kids, who are 4 and 6 were able to be quite independent and liked using the guides.” Lis8154, Trip Advisor For the more adventurous types, Richmond has free fossil hunting sites 12 kilometres north that you are welcome to explore. There are also Digging at Dusk (or dawn) tours, operated by passionate local palaeontologists who will teach you how to find, identify and excavate the 100 million year old fossils you could potentially unearth. The kids are sure to dig it.
