Outback Pioneers Overview
With Outback Pioneers, you step into pioneers’ shoes and discover holidays and experiences designed to take you to the heart of outback life, past and present. You’ll experience something that is uniquely Australian and is an iconic part of Australia’s story. It’s inspiring. It’s entertaining. It’s quirky.
Ride the Cobb and Co. stagecoach, laugh at an old time tent show, sail the Thomson River at sunset for a stockman’s campfire dinner, visit a historic working station and much more. Outback Pioneers award-winning experiences have all been created by the Kinnon family to share their passion for the outback and to help preserve the outback way of life.
Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience
Outback Pioneers in Longreach is the only place in Australia where you can experience a gallop in a Cobb & Co stagecoach along an old mail route through the bush. As well as this taste of transport pioneer style, the 4-hour experience includes the hilarious Harry Redford Old Time Tent Show, traditional smoko and a classic Australian movie in an old-time picture theatre. Hold on to your bonnets for an unforgettable morning of outback life!
Harry Redford Old Time Tent Show
You’ve probably never experienced anything quite like this hilarious mix of humour, slapstick and animal antics! It’s based on the traditional outback tent shows and tells a fictional story set in the time of Harry Redford (Captain Starlight) and adds a new dimension to his infamous adventures! This show is part of the Outback Pioneers Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience or can be booked separately. Guests can also enjoy a billy-can lunch to eat at the show if ordered in advance.
Starlight’s Cruise Experience
Come with Outback Pioneers on a sunset river cruise to the heart of outback tradition and legend. There are endless photo opportunities as you sail the lazy Thomson before going ashore for a stockman’s camp-fire dinner and traditional entertainment featuring the barefoot bush poet. Then the bush is illuminated by the Starlight’s Spectacular Sound & Light Picture Show – a unique big-screen presentation featuring the amazing adventures of the notorious cattle thief known as ‘Captain Starlight’.
Nogo Station Experience
This Outback Pioneers Experience gives you up-close insight into a working family property and its fascinating history. See a sheep shearer at work, tour the station on the ‘water run’, visit Captain Starlight’s Stockyards and be welcomed to the homestead by Abigail Kinnon who will show you the house and serve you one of her legendary home-baked ‘smokos’ (morning tea). The 4-hour experience leaves Longreach on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and points out the heritage sites of the town along the way.
Winton Discovery Experience
See Winton through local eyes on an Outback Pioneers coach from Longreach and visit all the attractions that have put this remote town on the tourist map. All ages love the award-winning Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum, and the pioneer story comes to life as you walk in the footsteps of Banjo Paterson for lunch at the famous North Gregory Hotel. The town has many other fascinating sights and delights for the afternoon. This experience leaves on Saturdays from Longreach.
Longreach is two days’ drive (4WD not necessary) or two hours’ flight from Brisbane. The 1175 kilometres distance puts you in a totally different world where sheep outnumber people, cattle roam the vast stations and the outback bush is an ever-present and ever-changing wonder.
The historic towns of Longreach and Winton are rich with pioneer heritage and are vibrant outposts of civilisation supporting the continuing tradition of grazing properties and welcoming the visitors that pass through on their outback adventures.
