Julia Creek is a true blue Aussie outback town in mid north Queensland. It’s famously the home of an elusive carnivorous marsupial – the Julia Creek Dunnart – as well as one of Australia’s top country music events, the Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival.
There’s plenty to see in Julia Creek as a holiday destination or a stopover on the way to Townsville or Mount Isa.
Things to do in Julia Creek
Julia Creek was named after the niece of Donald McIntyre, the first white settler in the region. McIntyre took up residence in 1864, but the township really started to bloom from 1907 when the railway leading to the mining districts developed.
The modern town boasts vintage architecture and historic displays covering its pastoral and mining history. When you’re in town, visit the Donald McIntryre Museum in Burke Street to view fascinating memorabilia from the region.
Get a glimpse of one of the region’s rare dunnarts at the Julia Creek Visitor Information Centre – or try to spot one in the wild! About the size of a mouse, these creatures have sharp teeth and eat insects, unlike many of their vegetarian relations.
The Visitor Information Centre is actually four buildings in one: three railway fettlers’ cottages and the former local jail have been relocated to the site.
These quaint rooms are now used to house artefacts, educational information and multimedia displays for visitors.
The annual Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival
The number one drawcard for visitors is the famous Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival, which takes place in April. It’s one of the most unique festivals in Australia! Covering sports, music and wacky novelty events, it gathers tourists and locals alike – from all walks of life.
Try your luck in the inaugural Outback Triathlon. There’s even a junior version for the kids to have a crack at too. There’s also bull riding and some more unusual events, like thong throwing, bog snorkelling and Australia’s Best Butt Competition! It’s all just classic Outback Queensland shananigan and in the evening you can settle in to enjoy live entertainment including world-class country music.
*Additional costs for competitions and luncheons.
