An iconic Australian event

A well-respected and prestigious event, the Cloncurry Challenge is a celebration of Australian stockmen and the Australian horse industry. The Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge originated in 1983 as a tribute to respected Cloncurry grazier and horseman Reg Brown. It quickly became a major drawcard and has been going strong for over 30 years!

Cloncurry – the friendly heart of the Great North West

The North West Queensland town of Cloncurry is nestled along the Cloncurry River, 120km east of Mt Isa and 770km west of Townsville. Known as the ‘friendly heart of the Great North West’, Cloncurry is a fair dinkum welcoming town, rich with history. It was explorers Burke and Wills who uncovered this gem of the North West before hundreds of miners flooded the town in the late 1860s chasing copper and gold. The Royal Flying Doctor Service originated in Cloncurry Queensland and Cloncurry was the destination of the first Qantas flight. Cloncurry is now home to 3000 people.

Things to do in Cloncurry

Steeped in history, Cloncurry Queensland is home to well-preserved heritage buildings, including the Post Office, Post Office Hotel, Court House and Saddle Shop. If you don’t mind a quiet stroll through a cemetery, keep an eye out for the final resting place of Australian writer and poet Dame Mary Gilmore and graves from as early as 1867. Mary Kathleen Park offers BBQ facilities, a playground and parklands, while Chinaman’s Dam, just 3km out of Cloncurry, promises the perfect spot to cool down before drinking in the spectacular colours of an outback sunset. The Visitor Information Centre and Museum showcases the township’s history, while the John Flynn Place Museum and Art Gallery pays tribute to the pioneers of the Royal Australian Flying Doctor Service.
