Biloela Spirit of the Land Mural – A Country Queensland Must-See

A striking dedication to the rich history of the Callide Valley, the Biloela Spirit of the Land Mural celebrates the stories of women from two cultures spanning Indigenous beginnings to 1928. The 100m round and 4m high magnificent mural wraps itself around a water reservoir, bringing the area’s history alive with the magic of art and storytelling.

Callide Valley women celebrated in art

The Spirit of the Land Mural honours the role women played in shaping the Callide Valley from Indigenous origins to European settlement and beyond. The display depicts stories of courage and strength in a challenging period of history. The mural portrays women and children picking cotton, the birth of the first European child in the area with the help of Aboriginal midwives, and the story of Margaret Rideout who rode side saddle from Biloela to Gladstone to board a boat seeking medicine for a sick child. The stories unfold around the mural with the help of interpretive plaques.

Stories that shape Australia’s history

From dreamtime stories to yarns around the campfire, Australians know how to share a tale or two. The Spirit of the Land mural proudly shares stories of friendship, loneliness, heartbreak and the building of community spirit in Biloela Australia.
